California Quarter Horse Tests Positive for EHV-1

A Contra Costa County, Calif., mare has tested positive for neuropathogenic equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1), the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) reported July 5.

"A 4-year-old Quarter Horse mare in Contra Costa County displaying severe neurologic signs has been confirmed positive for the neuropathogenic strain of equine herpesvirus-1," the CDFA said in a statement. "Due to the severity of clinical signs in this case of equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM), the mare was euthanized. Initial epidemiologic investigation indicates no exposed horses as the mare was the sole horse on a pasture with cattle. The CDFA continues with the epidemiologic investigation and to monitor the situation."

Equine herpesvirus-1 is highly contagious among horses and camelids and is generally spread via aerosol transmission (when infected animals sneeze and cough) and through contact with nasal secretions from infected animals. The disease can cause a variety of problems in horses, including rhinopneumonitis (a respiratory disease usually found in young horses), abortion in broodmares, and EHM (the neurologic form of EHV-1).

Fever, ataxia (incoordination), weakness or paralysis of the hind limbs, and incontinence are signs of EHM. If a horse that has possibly been exposed to EHV-1 begins to display any of the aforementioned signs, call your veterinarian immediately.

Montana Tornado 2013 Warning Today Strikes Forestgrove, Lewistown

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) ? A Montana tornado 2013 warning today has struck Forestgrove, Lewistown, and sections of Fergus County. The Montana tornado warning today July 9, 2013 was released by officials to news moments ago.

The National Weather Service in Great Falls tells news that a system in the area is prompting concerns. Officials report that ?at 236 PM MDT National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado 26 miles west of Forestgrove?. They also indicate that the storm was ?14 miles southwest of Lewistown? and ?moving east at 40 mph.?

Officials as a result have issued a warning for southern Fergus County in central Montana until 315 PM MDT today. The NHC indicates to news that the projected path of the storm is troubling. ?The most dangerous portion of the storm will generally remain over rural areas of southern Fergus County. This also includes Highway 87 between mile markers 39 and 40.? NHC also added that the system could reach Highway 200. ?This also includes Highway 200 between mile markers 68 and 72.?

Significant hail could strike the region as well. ?In addition to the tornado this storm is capable of producing Golf.? Officials add that the tornado may already be on the ground. Namely when a ?Tornado Warning is issued based on Doppler radar it means that strong rotation has been detected in the storm. A tornado may already be on the ground or is expected to develop shortly.?

The University of Texas at Austin Longhorns have been so successful in baseball that the school has been nicknamed ?The University of Texas at Omaha,? after the College World Series of Omaha.? T-shirts with ?The University of Texas at Omaha? have been sold since at least 2009.

Augie Garrido became the baseball coach in 1997 and the Longhorns baseball team went to the College World Series six consecutive years (2000-06), winning two national championships (2002 and 2005). Kings of Leon join in to help Okla. tornado relief

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? When tornadoes devastated parts of Oklahoma earlier this year, members of Kings of Leon decided to help out the people of the state that's been a huge part of their lives over the years.

They just weren't sure how, and opening up the bank account didn't seem the right way to go.

"It just felt like something we could lend a hand to," Jared Followill said. "We talked about just donating some money. But you know we just all started talking and we realized we'd probably raise more money by doing a show and it would probably be more fun for us than just writing a check. We can go there and be with the people, be with our family. It was one of those things that we didn't realize that it could happen. The people that we work with just made it happen really quickly."

The Kings of Leon's Rock for Oklahoma: A Benefit Concert for Oklahoma Tornado Victims will happen July 23. It's the third big fundraiser in the wake of the storms that killed dozens and uprooted thousands, preceded by efforts that included fellow Oklahomans Blake Shelton, Toby Keith, Garth Brooks, Ronnie Dunn and Carrie Underwood.

The Followills invited Oklahoma City residents The Flaming Lips and Jackson Browne and Built to Spill to participate in the concert at Chesapeake Energy Arena. Grace Potter and Ben Kweller will make guest appearances, and there will be a silent auction to win a meet-and-greet with Victoria's Secret Angels Lily Aldridge and Erin Heatherton.

The concert comes as the Kings wrap up a European tour and prepare to release their sixth album, "Mechanical Bull," later this year.

Known as a Nashville band, the Kings have strong and deep ties to Oklahoma. Half the Followill family band, which consists of brothers Jared, Nathan and Caleb and cousin Matthew, was born in the state. They cheer for Oklahoma sports teams and return every year for a family reunion in Talihina. And their fathers and many family members still live there.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit the United Way of Central Oklahoma May Tornadoes Relief Fund.

"Oklahoma's been a really huge part of our lives," Followill said. "We just have so many roots there and so many friends. A lot ... of people that are close to us were affected in one way or another, so I think it's just really important for us to do this and give pretty much all we can."

Curiosity Mars rover hits the road

Nasa's Curiosity Mars rover has finally begun the long drive to its primary mission destination - Mount Sharp.

For the past seven months, it has been investigating a site just east of its August 2012 touchdown point, drilling rocks and analysing their composition.

But scientists have now decided it is time for Curiosity to get rolling.

On Friday, engineers commanded the vehicle to make an 18m drive. On Monday it travelled 40m. It will however take many months to reach Mount Sharp.

The rover has to steer clear of a long bank of sand dunes that represent a potential trap. The intention also is to get to a specific site where satellites have indicated there are layers of sediment that were most likely laid down in water.

All up, Curiosity could have to roll roughly 8km to get to the places of key scientific interest. And if the cameras onboard spot unusual rocks along the way, the rover will be commanded to park and examine them. This could put the eventual arrival date deep into next year.

The mission team announced in early June that its extended stay at the small depression known as Yellowknife Bay was almost over.

Although a diversion to the main mission, it proved to be an extremely productive one. Curiosity found mudstones that were very probably deposited billions of years ago in a lake. And that followed the identification on the drive into Yellowknife Bay of rocks sculpted by flowing water in the distant past.

The rover - also called the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) - was put down in Mars' equatorial Gale Crater on 6 August last year.

Its mission goal is to probe the crater's sediments for evidence that past environments on the Red Planet could once have favoured microbial life.

TSA Agent Caught in Apple iPad Sting

In the latest apparent case of hundreds of thefts by TSA officers of passenger belongings, an Appl e iPad left behind at a security checkpoint in the Orlando airport was tracked 30 miles to the home of the TSA officer last seen handling it. The iPad was one of 10 purposely left behind at checkpoints at airports with a history of theft by government screeners, as part of an ABC News investigation. The TSA officer, Andy Ramirez, was no longer with the agency as of Wednesday afternoon.
